A 72-tablet pack of Finish dishwasher tablets cost €21.99 in Slovenian supermarkets in summer 2025. Ten months later, the same pack is €39.99. That's an 82% rise on a product you buy maybe four times a year. Nobody writes about it. Nobody runs a news cycle when cleaning supplies go up. But across the whole Slovenian cleaning aisle, the year's quietest inflation is the biggest.

What the data shows

Four adjacent cleaning categories in Slovenia all moved roughly twice as fast as the food basket — and some individual SKUs moved far more than that.

CategoryMedian changePaired SKUs
Dishwashing detergent+25.0%97
Cleaning tools+17.7%60
Softener+16.8%68
Household cleaners+16.0%291
Reference: basket median+9%8,168
Reference: bread+6%60

Across 516 paired cleaning-aisle SKUs, the typical rise is 16–18% — roughly twice the basket median and three times the bread-and-milk rise. The dishwashing category stretches even further: the 25% category median hides that many Finish and Somat SKUs rose 65–100% on a single pack.

The concrete examples tell the story faster than the aggregates:

Ajax Shower Power 500 ml€3.65€4.39+20%
Ajax Multi-Purpose 750 ml€3.73€4.39+18%

A Slovenian household that buys Finish tablets four times a year pays €72 extra on dishwasher tablets alone, before counting the softener, the multi-surface cleaner, and the bathroom spray. The total cleaning-aisle tab for a typical household is up roughly €30–€50 a year — larger than the rise on bread, coffee and yoghurt combined.

Why this happens

Cleaning products are bought less often than food. A pack of Finish tablets lasts three months; a bottle of softener lasts two. That means shelf-price rises don't register weekly — they register once, at the till, and the shopper has no fresh memory of the previous price. Manufacturers (Henkel for Somat, Reckitt for Finish, Henkel for Silan and Fairy, Colgate-Palmolive for Ajax) can push through input-cost rises on this rhythm with far less retailer resistance than they'd meet on bread or milk.

The raw materials matter, too. Dishwasher tablets and detergent gels depend on sodium carbonate and surfactants whose commodity prices rose through 2024–2025. Softeners use esterquats derived from tallow and palm, also up. But the commodity rise was, at most, 10–15%. The shelf rise — 17% median, 25% for dishwashing — is larger than input costs justify. That gap is manufacturer margin that the category tolerates because nobody's watching.

There is a brand dimension too. The biggest Slovenian own-label lines in this aisle are thin or absent — there is no Denkmit-equivalent, no Bosque Verde, no aggressive retailer pulling the price line down. Which means Henkel and Reckitt effectively set the ceiling, and the ceiling has gone up.

What it means for you

If your grocery bill is growing faster than the food aisle alone would predict, check what you last bought in the cleaning aisle. A household that buys Finish and Somat without checking pays €50–€80 more per year than a year ago, on products where own-label and drugstore alternatives do exist. Denkmit (DM), Spar own-label and Hofer's discount lines all sit 30–50% below the branded price on tablets and softener, and they didn't inflate like the premium brands did. The cleaning aisle is the part of the shop where switching still saves real money.
