At a Lidl in Helsinki, a 1.5-litre bottle of Wau! laundry liquid is €4.15. Next shelf, 1.84 litres of Omo — Finland's biggest detergent brand — is €11.65. Same load of laundry, nearly three times the money. And Omo isn't even the top of the aisle.

What the data shows

Across ten weeks of Finnish shelf prices, the detergent aisle stretches further than in any other European market we track — not because the top is unusually high, but because the bottom has somewhere to go.

Omo, Finland's biggest brand by record count, sits at 3.1× Wau! per litre. Vanish, the specialty stain-remover premium, is Wau!. The unusual thing about Finland is not that the top is high — it is that the bottom has somewhere to go, because Lidl plays a deeper discount game than most Finnish grocery chains are willing to.

In bottles she actually carries home: a 1.5-litre Wau! Color is €4.15 on the median week. A 1.84-litre Omo is €11.65. A 1.5-litre Heti — a long-standing Finnish brand — lands in the middle at €9.15. One bottle of Omo buys nearly three bottles of Wau! with change.

Why this happens

Finland's grocery retail is dominated by two chains — K-Ryhmä and S-Ryhmä — whose private-label strategy has historically been premium-flavoured: Pirkka and Kotimaista signal Finnish-made and reliable, not cheap. Neither chain runs a deep-discount line on laundry gel. Lidl walked into that gap and built Wau! to fill it.

The result is a mid-market clustered €5–€9 a litre and a discount floor at €2.73, sitting alone. The shopper in Lidl sees Wau! and Omo side by side; the shopper in Prisma or K-Citymarket sees Lumme, Omo, Serto — and has no Wau!-equivalent within reach.

What it means for you

A household that washes twice a week runs through roughly ten litres of gel a year. On Wau! that's €27. On Omo that's €85. The Wau! bottle is €2.79 once; the saving is €58. The laundry comes out the same. If there's a Lidl on your route home, the bottle is there.

Common Questions

What is Sivix?

Sivix is a crowdsourced price network where everyday shoppers scan products and submit real-world prices — building the most accurate, real-time view of what things cost near you.

Is Sivix free to use?

Yes. Scanning products, submitting prices, and browsing the price network are all free — Sivix is built by its community of shoppers.

How do I find the best price?

Scan products and submit accurate prices using the Sivix app. Every validated submission makes the data sharper — giving you and everyone else a clearer picture of where to find the best deals.

How accurate are the prices?

Prices are submitted by real shoppers from real shelves and reflect data from roughly the last 90 days. The more people contribute in your area, the sharper and more current the picture — and historical prices are stored immutably so trends can’t be quietly rewritten.

Does Sivix show online prices too?

Yes, where available. Alongside real in-store prices reported by shoppers, Sivix also gathers online prices in a growing number of countries — so you can compare what a product costs at the shelf versus online and see where it’s actually cheaper.

Which countries and stores does Sivix cover?

Sivix already has data across several European markets — Slovenia, Germany, Finland, Spain and more — and it grows wherever people contribute. You can scan products in any store; coverage follows the community.

Why does price transparency matter?

Transparent prices help consumers compare stores, identify better deals, and understand market pricing dynamics.

Why should I contribute?

Every price you submit makes the network more accurate for everyone. The more you contribute, the better your access to real-time data — and the more you can save. Those who join early and contribute consistently become the most established voices in the network.

Do I get anything for contributing?

Every verified submission earns recognition in the network, and the people who join early and contribute consistently become its most established voices.
